Swimming is one of the staples of the a fun out door activity promoting physical fitness, teamwork, and self reliance. Swimming is enjoyed at all age levels and builds confidence while teaching a valuable life skill.

Who can go swimming?

Everyone is welcome to go swimming at camp. Swimming is available for all swimming abilities. In Scouting these ability groups are "Swimmer" for the most proficient, "Beginner" for those capable of swimming independently for short distances, and "Learner" for those just starting out.

When can we go swimming?

Swimming, like lemonade, is best enjoyed when it is warm out. At our summer camps the pools and water fronts are set up and available in the summer months. Swimming at our camps is only available to summer camp participants. Swimming camp be a year round activity. Find a local community center or indoor pool and make it a fun winter activity for your group.

How do we go boating?

One leader needs to have taken and be current in Safe Swimm Defense training. This training is available online at My.Scouting.org or can be taken at our Boy Scout Summer Camps during the summer camp season. The training is only thirty minutes long and covers the steps to follow to ensure a safe swimming activity.

Swimming Test Requirements


  • Jump feet first into water over the head, level off, and begin swimming.
  • Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: side, breast, trudgen, or crawl. Swim 25 yards using an easy, resting backstroke.
  • The 100 yards must be completed without stops and must include at least one sharp turn.
  • Rest by floating.Long enough to demonstrate ability to rest when exhausted.


  • Jump feet first into water over the head, level off, and begin swimming.
  • Swim 25 feet on the surface.
  • Stop, turn, and resume swimming back to the starting place.


  • Did not complete either of the swimming tests.
